Winter by Joseph Rubens Powell

Winter

By Joseph Rubens Powell, 1870

A single figure carries an armful of firewood across a snowy field in this peaceful winter scene, painted in 1870 by British artist Joseph Rubens Powell. Warm brick houses wait in the distance, promising shelter and heat, while bare trees reach up into a soft, pale sky. Over on the right, a church tower rises above the frozen landscape. Everything is muffled under fresh snow, giving the whole picture that particular hush you only find on a truly cold day.

Powell favored watercolor, and the medium suits this subject beautifully. Gentle washes of muted brown and faint blue mingle across the surface, and much of the snow is simply the bare paper left untouched, glowing pale through the scene. Rural winter views like this were a favorite among Victorian painters, who liked to honor the rhythms of country life and the turning of the seasons. This is not a grand masterpiece, and it does not pretend to be. Its charm lies in something more modest, the ordinary labor of gathering wood to stay warm, and the plain loveliness of a well-known place dressed in snow.
