Mockney

Two figures in orange, each no bigger than a fingernail, share a strip of white paint that could be a diving board, a towel, or a shelf of ice. One lies flat with arms stretched forward, mid float or mid nap. The other stands at the end, head tilted down, casting a long shadow across the blue. Everything around them is thick horizontal paint, dragged across the canvas in ridges you could feel with a fingertip. The blue is not water exactly, and not sky either. It is just paint, laid on heavily enough that your eye agrees to call it a pool.

Werner Bronkhorst is a South African born artist based in Australia, and this push and pull between abstract surface and tiny realism is his signature move. He builds the background first with palette knives and squeegees, letting the material behave the way it wants, then adds figures so small they need a fine brush and steady nerves. The result plays a trick on scale: the ridges of paint become lane ropes, waves, or sun loungers depending on how you read them. As for the title, "mockney" is British slang for someone faking a Cockney accent, a posh person pretending to be working class. Bronkhorst tends to pick titles with a sideways grin rather than an explanation, and this one fits a painting that is pretending, quite openly, to be a swimming pool.
