By Willem Cornelis Bauer, 1900
This delicate winter etching comes from the Dutch artist Willem Cornelis Bauer, made around 1900. Snow covers the ground along the left side, where bare trees reach their thin branches up toward a pale, empty sky. A calm pond sits at the center, catching the faint light, and past it the land opens into flat fields marked here and there by slender trees along the horizon. The whole scene feels like a cold, quiet morning walk through the countryside, hushed and just a bit solitary.
The real pleasure here lies in Bauer's handling of line. Working with an etching needle, he built up the tangle of twigs and the soft texture of the snow with remarkable care. Near the bottom edge of the print, keep an eye out for a small treat: two birds sitting side by side, with a third caught in mid flight nearby. Placed almost like a note scribbled in the margin, these tiny figures bring a spark of life to the picture and gently remind us that even the stillest winter day has its passing visitors.
