Boats - Capri
By Henrique Pousão, 1882
Two humble fishing boats sit side by side on a warm, sandy beach in this small painting by Portuguese artist Henrique Pousão. The bright red boat immediately catches your eye, its glowing color set against the cool blue sea and the pale tones of the shore. Pousão made this work in 1882 while staying on the island of Capri, a sunny spot off the coast of Italy that attracted plenty of painters hoping to capture its calm coastal light.
Part of the charm here lies in how freely the picture is painted. The brushstrokes are easy to spot, especially in the water, where quick dabs of blue and green hint at the soft rippling of the sea. That loose, honest style links Pousão to the naturalist painters of his time, artists who preferred simple everyday scenes over anything grand or dramatic. Pousão died at only 25, so his career ended before he could truly find his full voice. Still, works like this reveal a young painter with a sharp eye for color and a genuine sense of sunlight.
