Boats - Capri by Henrique Pousão

Boats - Capri

By Henrique Pousão, 1882

Two modest fishing boats rest on a sun-drenched shore in this charming scene from Capri. The vivid orange-red of the smaller boat creates a striking focal point against the muted tones of the beach and the soft blue-grey water beyond. The artist captures a simple moment of stillness, with the boats pulled up onto the sand, their working day presumably done.

Portuguese painter Henrique Pousão created this piece during his travels in Italy in the 1880s. Despite his tragically short life (he died at just 26), Pousão managed to develop a distinctive approach that blended impressionist light effects with a more structured composition. The thick, confident brushstrokes and attention to how sunlight plays across different surfaces show an artist working quickly and directly from observation, trying to capture the particular quality of Mediterranean light that has drawn painters to these shores for centuries.
