Blueberries and Damsons
By Raquel Alvarez Sardina
Spilling from a small blue and white porcelain cup, a cluster of plump blueberries scatters across a cool marble surface. Off to the right sit two damsons, those deep blue-purple plums whose smooth, dusty skin contrasts nicely with the bumpy texture of the berries. The dark background pushes everything forward, letting the fruit and the soft glow on the marble catch your eye. Look closely and you can spot the artist's initials carved into a little red signature mark at the bottom corner.
This painting comes from Raquel Alvarez Sardina, a Spanish-born artist known for her classical still life work in the tradition of the old masters. She paints in a careful, realistic style that owes a lot to artists like the Dutch and Spanish painters of centuries past, who loved arranging humble objects and lighting them with great drama. The whole scene is built around a single color family, with cool blues and greys playing off the warmth of the damson stems. It is a quiet, simple subject, but that is rather the point. Sometimes a handful of fruit and a tipped-over cup is enough to make you slow down and really look.
