Plums by Raquel Alvarez Sardina

Plums

By Raquel Alvarez Sardina, 2010

Five plums gather on a pale tabletop, glowing against a background so dark it almost swallows them whole. Spanish painter Raquel Alvarez Sardina gives each piece of fruit its own personality, with skins that shift from deep purple to soft blue depending on how the light hits them. A lone leaf rests to the side, a small touch that keeps the whole arrangement from feeling too neat. Nothing here is showy. These are just ordinary plums, painted by someone who clearly enjoyed studying them closely.

The setup connects to a long line of still life painting, where humble objects become worthy of a second look. Alvarez Sardina paints in a realist manner rooted in the old masters, and her use of that pitch black backdrop to push the fruit toward the viewer echoes the Spanish Baroque tradition, where painters loved playing light against deep shadow. The finished work sits comfortably between past and present, quietly suggesting that even something as plain as a bowl of fruit can reward a patient eye.
