Damsons and Blueberries
By Raquel Alvarez Sardina, 2010
Take a close look at this small still life and you might second-guess what you are seeing. The dark blue plums, known as damsons, sit clustered together with a few tiny blueberries scattered around them. The fruit shares the same deep, dusky color, that soft powdery bloom you find on freshly picked fruit before anyone wipes it clean. Raquel Alvarez Sardina painted this in 2010, and she has a real gift for making everyday objects feel quiet and a little bit special.
What makes this piece work is the careful play of light. A warm glow catches the rounded tops of the fruit while the background fades into near-blackness, a trick borrowed from the old masters who loved dramatic contrast. The curling stems and the worn marble surface add texture and a sense of age. Notice the artist's little red stamp in the bottom corner, a personal touch that signs off this calm and honest study of simple things.
