Damsons and Blueberries
By Raquel Alvarez Sardina, 2010
A cluster of dark blue damson plums huddles together on a pale marble ledge, with a few small blueberries rolling off to the sides. The fruit wears that soft, powdery bloom you only see on produce fresh from the branch, before hands or cloths rub it away. Raquel Alvarez Sardina painted this modest still life in 2010, choosing a subject so ordinary that most people would walk right past it at the market. Her skill lies in giving these humble plums a sense of stillness and worth.
Light does most of the storytelling here. A warm glow settles on the rounded shoulders of the fruit while everything behind melts into shadow, a dramatic contrast that echoes the old Dutch and Spanish masters who built entire careers on darkness and glow. The little curling stems, some dried and twisting, and the aged surface of the marble bring a gentle sense of texture and time. Down in the corner sits the artist's small red stamp, a quiet signature closing out this honest look at simple fruit.
