Bramley

By Raquel Alvarez Sardina, 2010

A single Bramley apple sits at the center of this quiet still life by Spanish painter Raquel Alvarez Sardina, finished in 2010. The Bramley is a well loved English cooking apple, famous for its sharp, tart flavor and a staple in British kitchens for generations. Its twisty stem still juts upward, and a few leaves have begun to dry and curl around it. Warm yellows and gentle reds catch the light and seem to glow against a background so dark it almost disappears.

Sardina paints in a classical realist manner, following the tradition of the old Dutch and Spanish masters who found real drama in simple things. Fruit, eggs, and humble kitchen objects fill much of her work, brought to life through soft light and patient brushwork that give them a surprising sense of weight. Nothing here shouts for attention, which is exactly why it stays with you. A plain apple, the sort easily overlooked on a kitchen counter, becomes something worth a closer look.
