Farewell ceremony for the International Brigades in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War by Robert Capa

Farewell ceremony for the International Brigades in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War

Robert Capa2.3 MB

This powerful photograph captures a soldier in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, his hand raised to his head in what appears to be a salute or gesture of emotion. Robert Capa, one of the most celebrated war photographers of the twentieth century, documented the farewell ceremony for the International Brigades, volunteers from around the world who came to defend the Spanish Republic against fascist forces. The image shows the raw human cost of conflict, with the soldier's upward gaze and the crowd of faces behind him creating a moment of collective feeling during a time of profound upheaval. Capa famously said, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough," and this photograph demonstrates his commitment to being in the thick of events. He risked his life repeatedly to document the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939, creating images that helped shape how the world understood the conflict. The International Brigades were eventually withdrawn in 1938 as part of a failed attempt to secure international support for the Republic, and many of these volunteers would never return home or would go on to fight in World War II.
