Queen as Ziggy Stardust
By Banksy, 2020
Here we see Queen Elizabeth II reimagined with the famous lightning bolt of David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust persona slashed across her face. Banksy, the anonymous British street artist, created this stencil piece in Bristol back in 2012 to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, her sixty years on the throne. Painted on a plain wall, it brings together two icons of British culture, the monarch and the rock star, in one cheeky image. The bold red and blue streak against the black and white portrait is instantly recognizable to anyone who knows Bowie's groundbreaking 1973 album cover.
What makes this work so typical of Banksy is the playful clash of high and low, royalty and rebellion. The Queen stands as a symbol of tradition and order, while Bowie represented freedom, reinvention, and breaking the rules. By merging the two, Banksy gives us a fun little jolt of surprise and invites us to smile at the unexpected pairing. Like much of his street art, it appeared without warning and quickly became a talking point, proving that a simple stencil on a wall can capture a whole nation's sense of humor.
