The Sleepers (Le Sommeil) by Gustave Courbet

The Sleepers (Le Sommeil)

By Gustave Courbet, 1866

This sensual painting by Gustave Courbet caused quite a scandal when it was created in 1866. Commissioned by a wealthy Turkish diplomat for his private collection, the work depicts two women in an intimate embrace on rumpled white sheets. The scene includes luxurious details like scattered jewelry, a small table with a decorative vase of flowers, and an overturned pearl necklace, suggesting the aftermath of passionate indulgence. Courbet painted it during a period when he was exploring increasingly bold and controversial subjects.

As a leading figure of the Realist movement, Courbet was known for painting everyday life without idealization, but this work ventured into more provocative territory. The painting remained hidden from public view for decades, considered too explicit for respectable society. The artist's masterful technique is evident in how he renders the soft skin tones against crisp white linens and captures the relaxed, sleeping poses of his subjects. Today it's recognized as an important example of 19th-century European art that challenged social conventions, though it still retains its power to surprise viewers with its frank sensuality.
