Seguret Village, Provence by Jennifer Irvine

Seguret Village, Provence

By Jennifer Irvine, 2010

Step into a sunlit corner of Provence with this cheerful scene by British artist Jennifer Irvine. Painted in 2010, it captures the village of Séguret, a tiny medieval hilltop town in the south of France known for its golden stone houses and winding lanes. Irvine fills the picture with the things that make the region so beloved: pale blue shutters, climbing roses, a terracotta pot of greenery, and a path bathed in warm light. The white blossoms tumbling across the foreground feel close enough to touch.

Irvine works in a bold, simple style with thick paint and clean shapes. She is not aiming for photographic detail. Instead, she gives us strong colors and confident brushwork that capture the feeling of a place rather than every small fact about it. The deep blue shadows stretching across the path are a nice touch, hinting at a hot summer afternoon when the sun sits high overhead. Her signature sits in the lower left, tucked neatly into the stone wall, a quiet sign-off to a happy little tribute to French village life.
