Windowsill with Rock Samphire by Susan Ashworth

Windowsill with Rock Samphire

By Susan Ashworth, 2010

This quiet still life captures a sunlit windowsill crowded with an appealing clutter of glass jars and wildflowers. The rock samphire, a coastal plant with fleshy leaves and small blooms, sits alongside other stems in various containers, creating an informal arrangement that feels wonderfully unstudied. The painting has that lovely quality of something glimpsed rather than posed, as if the artist simply painted what was already there on an ordinary day.

The muted palette of soft greens, grays, and blues gives the whole scene a calm, almost meditative quality. Notice how the translucent jars catch and hold the light, and how shadows fall gently across the surfaces. There's something very honest about this approach to painting everyday objects. The brushwork is loose but confident, capturing the essence of the flowers and containers without fussing over every detail. It's the kind of painting that invites you to slow down and appreciate the simple beauty of common things gathered together in casual harmony.
