Night Swimming
By Tom Speedy, 2010
A lone swimmer stands waist deep in shimmering water, back turned to us, caught in a private moment of stillness. Tom Speedy painted this scene, called "Night Swimming," in 2010, and the name is a bit of a wink. Nothing here reads as dark or nighttime. The surface blazes with gold and warm orange, threaded with ripples of green and dotted with little bursts of white light that scatter across the whole canvas like sun catching the waves.
Rendering the figure as a solid black silhouette was a smart choice. Stripped of any detail, the person becomes almost anyone, which makes it easy to picture yourself standing there and looking out at the glowing water. Below the swimmer, the reflection splinters into jagged black shapes that mimic the restless movement of the surface. The concept is straightforward, but the confident handling and rich, liquid color give the painting a warm, dreamy calm that lingers.
