Whispering Leaves
By Tony Allain, 2010
Autumn bursts to life in this pastel by British artist Tony Allain, who painted "Whispering Leaves" in 2010. A large tree dominates the scene, its branches speckled with flecks of orange, red, and gold that seem to shimmer against patches of sky. The dark trunk holds everything together on the right side, while a bright golden path runs across the front of the picture, broken up by pools of light and shadow that flicker and shift the longer you watch.
Allain paints mostly in pastel and oil, and he is known for working fast and loose, chasing light and mood instead of tiny details. That habit shows clearly here in the quick dabs of color and the loose, almost carefree strokes. He does not bother with every leaf and twig, choosing instead to capture the sensation of standing beneath the tree while sunlight pours through and a breeze rustles overhead.
The approach grows out of the plein air tradition, where painters head outdoors to grab a passing moment before it fades. Allain has picked up plenty of awards over the years and belongs to several pastel societies, and this piece hints at why. The subject is nothing fancy, just a tree in fall, but the warmth and easy movement make it a pleasant thing to sit with.
