River Garry
By Tony Allain, 2010
Painted in pastel by Tony Allain, this evening scene follows the River Garry as it curves through the Scottish Highlands. The sky is washed with soft pinks and purples, and those same colors drip down into the water below, where the river catches the very last of the day's light. Allain lets that bright ribbon of reflection cut through the darker land, and it pulls your gaze straight into the middle of the picture. He works mostly in pastels and oils, and he has a knack for pinning down light that only lasts a moment.
The looseness of his marks is what gives the piece its charm. Rather than fussing over small details, Allain lays down big blocks of color and trusts you to fill in the rest. The dark stretches of land sit heavy and still, while the sky and water feel like they are quietly shifting. Born in Jersey in the Channel Islands and later settled in New Zealand, he built a solid name among pastel painters around the world. This is a simple landscape at heart, but its calm, warm mood gives it a gentle hold on anyone who stops to look.
