Evening Light, Polzeath by Robert Kelsey

Evening Light, Polzeath

By Robert Kelsey, 2010

Painted in 2010 by Scottish artist Robert Kelsey, this seaside scene captures a quiet evening at Polzeath, a popular beach on the north coast of Cornwall. The painting glows with cool blues and soft lilacs, broken only by warm patches of yellow light catching the clouds. Those golden touches reflect down onto the wet sand, where the tide has pulled back to leave shimmering pools across the foreground. It is a calm, almost meditative view of a place known for its big skies and wide-open shores.

Kelsey trained as an engineer before turning to painting full time, and his work often focuses on coastal and marine subjects across Scotland and beyond. His loose, confident brushwork here suggests rather than spells out every detail, letting the clouds, headland, and rippling sand come together with just a few well-placed strokes. The result feels fresh and unfussy, the kind of scene anyone who has walked a beach at dusk will recognise. Rather than aiming for drama, the painting settles into a gentle stillness, the sort of moment when the day is winding down and the light slowly fades.
