The Fife Coast from North Berwick by Robert Kelsey

The Fife Coast from North Berwick

By Robert Kelsey, 2010

This coastal landscape captures the view across the Firth of Forth from North Berwick, a seaside town in East Lothian, Scotland, looking toward the distant Fife coastline. Artist Robert Kelsey has painted the scene with loose, expressive brushstrokes that give the windswept grasses in the foreground a wonderful sense of movement. The golden tones of the grassland contrast beautifully with the cool blues and silvers of the water and dramatic sky above. Kelsey's style sits comfortably within the tradition of British landscape painting, focusing on capturing the ever-changing light and weather conditions of the Scottish coast. The painting has an immediacy to it, as if the artist worked quickly to catch a particular moment when storm clouds were breaking and allowing golden light to pierce through. Those tiny white sailboats on the horizon add a nice human element to an otherwise wild and moody scene, reminding us of the relationship between people and this rugged coastal landscape.
