The Fife Coast from North Berwick
By Robert Kelsey, 2010
Robert Kelsey painted this peaceful coastal scene in 2010, showing the view from North Berwick across the Firth of Forth toward the Fife shoreline. Tall grasses lean and sway in the foreground, catching the warm light, while beyond them a soft golden glow settles over the water. A low headland cuts across the horizon, and if you glance to the right you will spot two tiny sailboats drifting in the distance. As a Scottish artist devoted to his home country, Kelsey spent years capturing its coasts, hills, and restless skies, and this is clearly a place he knew inside and out.
The sky is really the star here, filling well over half the canvas and swirling with motion. Warm yellows melt into cooler grays and blues, hinting at weather that might turn sunny or stormy at any moment. Kelsey built up his colors with thick, loose brushwork, giving the whole scene a lively, hands-on quality. Rather than reaching for drama, he settled for something honest and calm, a familiar view painted with real affection for the ever changing light of the Scottish coast.
